CHRISTINA 0. LINBOBG, OF GALE'ION, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION BELT-BUCKLE AND GARMENT-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTINA O. LIN- BORG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galeton, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombination Belt-Buckles and Garment-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined belt buckle and garment holder, such as are used for securing pointed or dip waist lines.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which may be employed in connection with any desired number of belts without sewing or pinning to the belt, and may be arranged to produce a perfect dip effect or a straight effect, as may be desired.
W'ith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing this improved fastener applied, with parts of the skirt broken out to more clearly illustrate its operation. Fig. 2 is a front view of this improved garment fastener in an open position. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the device as applied; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the fastener; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the completed buckle with the ornamentation thereon, and with parts broken out.
In the embodiment illustrated, a slotted back plate 1 is shown, which may be of any suitable or desired shape and composed of any suitable metal, provided at its upper edge with down-turned rearwardly extending hooks 2, which are designed to engage the skirt belt when the device is applied, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Arranged on the front face of this plate 1, preferably between the hooks 2, is a forwardly extending hook or catch 8, for a purpose to be described.v
A front plate 1 is reduced in width and pivotally connected at one end to the lower end of the plate 1 in any suitable manner, preferably having a hinge connection with a pintle 5 connecting the two plates. A pin Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 1911.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
Serial No. 635,933.
6 is mounted on this pintle and extends on the rear face of the plate 1, being designed when applied to be passed through the various garments and passed upwardly between the covering and the front corset stays in -a well known manner, such as is common in devices of this character.
The front face of the back plate 1 is provided with a plurality of prongs or teeth 7 preferably arranged in two vertical series spaced longitudinally apart and designed to engage the opposite ends of the belt to be secured. The pivoted front plate 4 is also provided on its inner face with teeth 8, arranged to cooperate with the edges of the slots formed in plate 1, adjacent to the teeth 7 for securely fastening the belt in operative position.
By the construct-ion of the back late 1 and the arrangement of the teeth 7 ormed therefrom a perfect holding buckle is provided when the hingedly connected plate is brought in contact with the backplate, and as will be observed the belt is not necessarily mutilated when punctured by the teeth 7 of the plate 1 for the reason that the teeth 8 of the hinged plate engage with the opposite walls of the slots formed in plate 1, said teeth 8 do not puncture the belt but take hold of the same and bindingly clamp it against the teeth engaging edges of said slots. As clearly shown the prongs or teeth 8 are separated by flat projecting lugs 8 which extend beyond said teeth and operate to properly force and hold the belt in alinement when secured.
The free end of the plate 4 is provided with an inwardly extending spring catch 9 adapted to engage the catch 3 on the rear plate 1 for locking the members detachably in operative position. Any suitable ornamentation may be provided for the front face of the plate 4, which may be applied thereto in any suitable or desired manner. The teeth 7 and 8 on the rear and front plates may be formed in any suitable or desired manner, being here shown in the form of spurs struck from the bodies of the plates.
In the application of this device, the pin 6 is inserted through the skirt and other intervening garments and passed up between the stay covering and the stay of the corset. The skirt and band is then pulled down under the hooks 2 on the rear plate 1, and the device is then ready to receive the belt, one end of which is engaged with one series of teeth as 7 on the plate 1, and the belt is then passed around the waist of the wearer and the other end engaged with the other series of teeth. The front plate 4 is then swung upwardly into closed position which causes the teeth 8 thereof to become embedded in the material of the belt and hold it securely in operative position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor detailsv of construction may be. resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention claimed.
I claim as my invention:
A combined belt buckle and garment holder comprising two hingedly connected plates forming a back and a reduced front member, means for detachably holding the plates in binding engagement with one another, the back member being longitudinally slotted at each side, two series of inwardly disposed projecting teeth forming an integral part of the intermediate portion of said back member, teeth projecting from the opposite edges of the reduced front member adapted for frictional engagement with the oppositely disposed edges of the walls forming the slots of the rear member, the teeth of said reduced front member being separated by lateral lugs in the plane of the front member, and means secured to said buckle for attaching the same to a garment.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
