vBLADE FOR SAFETY-RAZORS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 17, 1912.
Original application file d July 19, 1910, Serial No. 572,743'. Divided and this application filed October 1,
1912. Serial No. 723,352.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known t-hat I, LEoNmAs H. Cnnss, a citizen of the United States, residing in West Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain. -new and useful Improvements in Blades for Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
The application for this patent is a division of my formerapplication No. 572,743, iledJuly 19, 1910, patented July 4, 1911, No. 996,837. My present invention relates to blades for safety razors of the kind shown in my former patent. In this class of razors the blades are Acommonly made thin to economize material, and to facilitate manufactureand it is desirable that the blade should be provided with devices for positioning. it in the holder and for preventing it from moving sidewise therein.
According to my invention I provide a blade made of thin steel,'ot' proper thickvness to'hold an edge but not so thin as to be flexible or necessarily so as no flexible quality in the blade is required. It is formed on opposite sides near its rear edge with llaterally projecting lugs which serve as handles or finger-rests when inserting the blade in the holder. These lugs are extended rearwardly, .serve in positioning the blade and prevent sidewis'e movement thereof.
In the accompanying drawings1-Figre 1 is,a top plan View ot a safety razor blade made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof.' Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a` portion of a safety razor with my improved blade in place, parts of the holder being broken away for the purpose of illustrating how the blade is disposed in the` holder.
The blade A has a straight sharp cutting edge a and a parallel rear edge a of substantially the same length. -The side edges a2 of the blade are straight and parallel with each other. lThe blade is formed on opposite sides near its rear edge with laterally projecting lugs a3 which serve as handles orfinger-rests when inserting the blade in the holder. These lugs are extended rearwardly at a4 beyond the rear edge a and serve to positionthe blade in its holder and prevent sidcwlse movementof the blade therein.
Fig. 3 shows a safety razor of the kind described in my former patent and indicates how the blade is seated therein. The bladeholder comprises two members, B, B', having a shallow space between them to receive the blade. These two members .fue :onnected at their rear edges by a Hangt To insert the blade itis held by the thumb and hrs. finger which engage the laterally project-ing lugs a3 and it is moved rearwardly until the rear edge a. of the blade engages the flange b and the extensions a* of the lugs o. lie at opposite ends of the flange I). lVhen thus disposed, the blade is properly positioned and sidewise movementthcreof iS prevented.
W'hile the blade is especially designed for,
use in the particular blade-holder shown it may be used in safety razors of different construction.
I claim as my invention l. A safety razor blade. having front and rear edges Iof substantially the same length and formed on its opposite side edges withlaterally projecting lugs-having portions extending rearwardly beyond the rear edge of the blade.
2. A safety rafkor blade substantially rectangular in shape provided witlha *cutting edge on one of the longer sides, lugs on the corners opposite the cutting ed e extending laterally beyond the sides an rearwardly beyond' the back of the blade.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
LEONIDAS H. CRESS.
