Abstract

One dismounts a bearing (12) on a steel work roll (11) by lifting the roll on to a roll support (13) which has wheels (17-20) on which the roll will rest. The bearing (12) is then fixed in a support (41) which is movable towards and away from the roll support. Then, one applies a lifting force on the bearing for substantially balancing the weight of the bearing. By means of a hydraulic cylinder (32) applied between the roll support and the bearing support, one forces the bearing out of the roll journal while slowly rotating the roll in its support. A bearing is mounted in a corresponding manner. The bearing support (41) is carried by a truck (40) that rests on air cushions (43-46) and these air cushions are used to balance the weight of the bearing.
