Abstract

System includes radio base stations (BS1-BS3), communications links (104), mobile services switching centre (105), service node (107), trunk connections (108,109), processor (107a), receiving (107b), sending (107d), and calculating units (107e,107f). Calculation unit (107e) calculates transmission time offsets of the timing signals downlink sent by the radio base stations, while unit (107f) calculates the position of mobile radio terminals. Terminal MS2 must always have one uplink connection to report its measurements. Terminals MS1 and MS2 measure the relative receive times between the timing signals downlink (113-118) received from at least three radio base stations (BS1-BS3) and the second radio terminals MS2 pass them to service node (107) to calculate the transmission time offsets of the timing signals downlink.
