In a method of packaging, cylindrical objects e.g. bottles 2 in bags 17, the bottles are fed by a conveyer 1 and arranged in transverse rows having alternately n and (n + 1) bottles, on floor plate 3 of a store 4 where they are formed into a group 12 having the extreme rows each of (n + 1) bottles. The group 12 of bottles is conveyed horizontally by a catcher 14 to a position above an open bag 17 into which the bottles are then lowered. The store has stops 7 which stop the bottles of a row of (n + 1) bottles, and the bottles of an extreme row of n bottles pass through the space between the stops, into return conveyers 10, 11, so that the row of (n + 1) bottles is now the extreme row. In an example, as a row of n bottles leaves the plate, the conveyer 1 stops, also the end stops 7 are moved downwardly by the operation of a pneumatic cylinder 21, and the group 12 of bottles is transported by the catches 14. More than one group of bottles may be packaged in one bag. Fresh empty bags are provided by an opening and loading means 23.
