Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In an ionization smoke detector, the chamber 10, Fig. 7, is connected in series with a resistor (11), Fig. 6 (not shown), or a reference ionization chamber 16, across a 60-volt supply, the voltage across the chamber being less than 20 volts. In the presence of smoke the voltage across the chamber increases, a field-effect transistor 12 is caused to conduct if its threshold voltage is exceeded, triggering a thyristor 14 which in turn energizes a relay 15 operating a fire alarm. A bias voltage Us may be applied to the thyristor 14 to control the alarm threshold.
