Abstract

A microfluidic device comprises a liquid inlet having an inlet mouth (12) and liquid confinement means (40, 50) provided around the inlet mouth (12) to confine liquid (60) placed at the mouth to a predetermined area (55) around the mouth. The liquid confinement means (40, 50, 52) could be a hydrophobic material (50) or geometrical structure such as a channel (50) or recess (52) around the inlet, or a combination of both. Also disclosed is liquid confinement means around an array of liquid inlets which may or may not have their own liquid confinement means.
