Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a fine finished face efficiently by forming a thin manganese coating layer onto the surface of wire such that the layer is not broken under normal discharge condition for finish work but broken under normal discharge condition for rough machining. CONSTITUTION:A manganese coating layer of about 1mum thick is formed through electric galvanization onto the surface of a brass wire having diameter of about 0.25mm to produce an electric discharge machining wire. The manganese coating layer 2 is removed from the surface of the brass wire 1 in initial stage of discharge under rough machining discharge condition because of arc heat having high energy and explosive impact produced by the arc heat, thus enabling conventional machining with brass wire. During finish work, the manganese coating layer 2 is scarcely broken to improve electron emitting performance, and discharge is stabilized by providing a sufficient discharge gap and suppressing leak current and can be sustained with quite low energy. Consequently, a finely finished face can be obtained efficiently.
