Abstract

PURPOSE:To absorb transmitted light so that a display is blackened by providing the axis of polarization of a polarizing plate on an exist side in the direction intersecting orthogonally with the optical axis of the polarizing plate on the incident side of exist light which is returned nearly to linearly polarized light to said exit light. CONSTITUTION:A transparent ITO electrode provided on a glass substrate is patterned to a stripe shape as a 1st sheet of the substrate. A transparent ITO electrode provided on the glass substrate is patterned to a stripe shape so as to intersect orthogonally with the 1st sheet of the substrate as the 2nd sheet of the substrate. A mere glass substrate on which the electrodes are not formed is used as the 3rd sheet of the substrate. All the substrates are over coated with polyimide. The peripheries of three sheets of the substrates are sealed by a sealant to form the two layers to be injected with a liquid crystal. A pair of the polarizing plates 1, 2 are disposed on both faces of the liquid crystal cell in such a manner that the axes of polarization thereof intersect orthogonally with each other. The display which is nearly black and white is thereby enabled and the bright and sharp display having a high display grade is obtd.
