Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain styrene useful as an industrial raw material in high yield from toluene and methanol, by using a catalyst prepared by adding a specific beryllium compound to zeolite in which Na ions are substituted partially with Cs ions, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Toluene is brought into contact with methanol in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst prepared by adding a beryllium compound selected from oxides, halides, salts of a mineral acid and organic acid to faujasite zeolite having a molar ratio SiO2/Al2O3 in the range of (2:1)W(8:1) in which at least 20% Na ions are substituted by any ions of Cs, K or Rb to give styrene. Beryllium oxide, sulfate, chloride, acetate, etc. may be used as the beryllium compound. The amount of the beryllium compound to be added to the zeolite is 1W1.5wt% based on the zeolite.
