Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve responsiveness, low voltage driving characteristic, durability, etc. by sealing an electrochromic material, a material having coordination function for metals, and a nonliquid electrolyte including iodine compounds between transparent bodies having a pair of electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A layer of an EC material (WO3 or the like) is formed on a conductive film of one of a pair of electrode substrates provided with transparent conductive films on transparent substrates such as glass. A material having coordination function for metal, particularly a chelating agent (acetylacetone, dimethyl glyoxime, etc.) and the electrolyte (polyacrylic acid, etc.) contg. an iodine compound such as I2, LiI, CH2ICOOH or the like at 5X10<-3>mol/l- near satd. amt. in the electrolyte or a lower carboxylic acid contg. Cl or Br as a decoloring stabilizer at 1X10<-3>mol/l- near satd. amt., and a coloring accelerator (thiosalicylic acid, etc.) and made into nonliquid characteristic with polyvinyl butyral or the like having adhesive strength or track is sealed between a pair of such electrode substrates, whereby the dimming element or dimming control is made. In this way, the dimming element which is fast in responsiveness with <=1 volt driving voltage, is hard to cause failure and is free from leakage of liquid, etc. is obtained.
