Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain box bodies of the titled repeater which are small in size and light in weight, by forming the fiber-containing room in the joint ring with connects the cable coupling which detains the optical submarine cable to the pressure resisting cylinder of the optical submarine repeater, to have a pressure resisting airtight structure. CONSTITUTION:The tensile strength of an optical submarine cable 14 is detained by a cable coupling 23, and an optical fiber 1 and an electric power line 21 are derived to the repeater side from an airtight introducing section 25. Another airtight introducing section 20 at the repeater side is also installed through an end face plate 11. After the fibers 1 and wires 21 derived through the introducing sections 20 and 25 are connected to each other, respectively, at connecting points 26 and 27, a joint ring 19 united to the coupling 23 in one body is airtightly enclosed by a pressure resisting cylinder of the repeater 10 and an airtightly enclosing section 24, and thus, a fiber containing chamber 19a is formed in a space between the ring 19 and the end face plate 11. When this constitution is used, the whole space of the chamber 19a can contain some excess length of the fiber 1 and wire 21 even when the width of the ring is sufficiently narrowed, and thus, a housing for the repeater which is small in size and light in weight can be obtained. Moreover, this structure can also be manufactured by using an optical fiber having no penetration of water at the repeater side and by filling the chamber 19a with a viscous substance having a good wetting property.
