Abstract
PURPOSE: Glycyrrhetinic acid (olean-12-ene-11-oxo-3β-ol-30-oic acid) is reduced and the product is subjected to catalystic hydrogenation to produce the titled compound used as an anti-inflammatory or antiallergic with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: Glycyrrhetinic acid of formulaI(olean-12-ene-11-oxo-3β-ol-30-oic acid) is reduced, (A) straight by use of bis (2-methoxyethoxy)aluminum sodium hydride, (B) by methyl esterification of glycyrrhitinic acid with a diazomthane solution before the reduction with sodium aluminum hydride to prepare a triol of formula II (olean-12-ene-3β-11ξ,30-triol). The product is subjected to catalytic reduction in the presence of Pd/C catalyst to produce the objective compound of formula III.
EFFECT: The objective compound is obtained in high yield by no use of expensive platinum catalyst.
