Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a flocculating agent in high purity in high yield inexpensively, by subjecting methyl methacrylate to ester exchange with dimethylaminoethanol using a carbonate of a specific alkali metal as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a catalyst for ester exchange selected from the group consisting of potassium carbonate, cesium carbonate, and rubidium carbonate, a compound shown by the formulaIis reacted with a compound shown by the formula II, to give the desired compound shown by the formula III. The reactions is preferably carried out under reduced pressure in a range from 200W760Torr at 80W130°C. Methanol prepared as a by-product is removed out of the reaction system. Having sufficiently higher catalytic activity than other catalysts, and low reduction in yield caused by side reactions. The prepared ester is useful as a raw material for a cationic polymer to be used as a flocculating agent, electricallyconductive treatment, and agent for paper making.
