Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the influence of scattering light, to detect light signals of good S/N ratios and to measure the profiles of furnace top charging materials with high accuracy by irradiating polarized luminous fluxes to the surface of the top charging materials and passing the reflected light thereof through a polarizing filter.
CONSTITUTION: The axial lines of a light transmitter 14 and a photodetector 15 are adjusted. The light from the projector 18 of the transmitter 14 is passed through a polarizer 20 to irradiate the surface 12 of blast furnace top charging materials 13 in a spot shape. The reflected light thereof is passed through a condenser lens 21, a polarizing filter 22 and a photodetector sensor 23 of the photodetector 15 then through a band-pass filter 25. A modulator 24 and a driving device 26 of the transmitter 14 and the band-pass filter 25 and a driving device 27 of the photodetection side are connected via an arithmetic control device 28, by which the transmitter 14 and the photodetector 15 are driven to scan the surface 12 of the charging materials. At this time, the profiles of the materials 13, their changing with time, the thickness of the charging materials, the descending speed of the charging materials, etc. are displayed on a display device 29 from the respective angle data of that time.
