Abstract

PURPOSE: Pulp-like particles that are made by covering and binding titanium oxide fibers with a heat-resistant aromatic polymer, thus giving synthetic paper or a friction material such as brake lining with high heat resistance, electric insulation and dimensional stability.
CONSTITUTION: For example, a heat-resistant aromatic polymer such as poly-m- phenylene isophthalamide is dissolved in a solvent such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Then, titanium, oxide fibers are added to the solution and mixed, then they are introduced into a precipitating agent to produce the objective pulp-like particles in which titanium oxide fibers are covered and bound with the above polymer. The amount of the titanium oxide fiber in the particles in preferably 20W60wt%. The resultant particles are mixed with other fibrids, preferably of heat-resistant fiber of 1W5 denier and 2W20mm length, at a weight ratio of (40W90):(60W10) and made into paper.
