Abstract
PURPOSE:To remove a flaw on a steel slab by providing a detecting part on the outer circumference of a milling cutter to detect a contour of the steel slab surface and to automatically control the cutting of the milling cutter according to the contour. CONSTITUTION:In a device which cuts off the surface of a steel slab made by rolling a steel ingot produced by a steel furnace, according to the contour of the steel slab surface, a contact ring 18 is provided covering the outer circumference of a milling cutter 18 and being fit onto a shaft 17 of the cutter 18 sliding vertically but unrotatably with a rod 23 of the ring 18 connected to a detecting device 24 which gives a command to move a main shaft head 10 up and down to cut the surface of the steel slab by the predetermined cutting amount according to the contour of the steel slab surface thereby maintaining the cut-in of the cutter at about constant amount and enabling the removal of all the black surface or flaw in one cutting pass.
