Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhace the rate of detecting welding defects which are highly harmful by setting the angle of refraction of an ultrasonic beam to be 65 deg.-85 deg., and positioning a probe so that the dispersed refracted ultrasonic beam directly strikes the welded part on the outer surface of the tube. CONSTITUTION:The incident angle i of the ultrasonic beam 5 from the probe 3 is set, so that angle of refraction theta3 of the ultrasonic beam in the tube 1 can be set at 65 deg.-85 deg.. The position Ld of the probe 3 is determined so that the refracted ultrasonic beam X directly strikes against the welded part D3 of the center surface of the tube. In this method, the detection rate of the defects A and B in the parent part wherein the degree of harm is low is suppressed to a low level, and the detection rate of the very harmful welding defects C which extend from the center of the thickness to the outside is increased.
