Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the aimed substance in high purity and yield, by blowing air into the neutralization reaction system of an acrylic acid or methacrylic acid with an alkali metallic (bi)carbonate and the subsequent esterification reaction system, and adding water to the reaction product solution, separating the organic layer, and distilling the organic layer.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic acid or methacrylic acid is neutralized with an alkali metallic (bi)carbonate in an epihalohydrin in excess, and the resultant alkali metallic salt of the acid is reacted with an epihalohydrin in the presence of a catalyst to give the titled ester. In the process, air is blown into the reaction solution in the neutralization reaction system and the esterification reaction system, and water is added to the reaction solution after the completion of the reaction to separate the organic layer. The separated organic later is then distilled to afford the aimed substance. Preferably, a polymerization inhibitor is present in the reaction systems of both the neutralization and the esterification reactions.
EFFECT: The emulsification of the reaction solution in the subsequent washing with water is inhibited by blowing the air into the system.
