Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled thickening agent that comprises an emulsion of a non-crosslinked high-polymerization degree polymer containing methacrylic acid units in a high concentration and can be used without the need for neutralization with alkali.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrylic acid and a monomer copolymerizable therewith[e.g. a lower alkyl (4W7C) acrylate]are emulsion-polymerized at a relatively low temperature (about 20W60°C) using a persulfate salt and a metallic formaldehydesulfoxylate to form a thickening agent comprising an emulsion of a non- crosslinked high-polymerization degree polymer containing 50W70wt% methacrylic acid units. An aqueous solution obtained by neutralizing the emulsion with sodium hydroxide and that contains 5% sodium salt of the polymer has a viscosity of 30,000cps or more when at 25°C under the condition of 12r.p.m. using a BM type No.4 rotor. As small as about 0.1W1% (solid content) above-mentioned thickening agent added to a carpet back-sizing compound has a sufficient effect.
