Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, etc., in high yield and selectivity, by reacting 3- methyl-3-butenonitrile with 3-methyl-2-butenonitrile in the presence of a base of alkali metal amide.
CONSTITUTION: 3-Methyl-3-butenonitrile of formulaIis made to react with 3- methyl-2-butenonitrile of formula II in the presence of an alkali metal amide base (e.g. lithium diethylamide) to afford 1,5,5-trimethyl-3-amino-4-cyanocyclohexa-1,3-diene, which is converted to 3,5,5-trimethyl-6-cyano-cyclohexa-2-enone of formula IV by hydrolysis. The reaction is preferably carried out by metallizing with alkali metal amide in an ether solvent (e.g. THF), and reacting with the compound of formula II at ≤50°C.
