Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful for the preparation of monomers for addition polymerization, in a short time, in high yield, without side reactions, by reacting an epoxide compound with a primary or secondary amino compound using a catalyst comprising a Lewis acid which is available at a low cost and can be post-treated easily.
CONSTITUTION: The epoxide compound of formulaI(e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, etc.) is made to react with the primary amino compound (e.g. methylamine, ethylamine, etc.) or the secondary amino compound (e.g. dimethylamine, diethylamine, etc.) of formula II in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g. ZnCl2, SnCl2, SnCl4, FeCl3, TiCl3, etc.) as a catalyst to obtain the N-substituted amino-alcohol compound of formula III. The amount of the catalyst is usually 0.01W0.1mol, preferably 0.02W0.06mol per 1mol of the compound of formulaI. The reaction can be carried out mildly, in a short time, without causing polymerization, and the process is suitable for the industrial mass-preparation.
