Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a black rust-inhibiting paint which converts rust formed on an iron-containing substrate into black rust to make the rust unnoticeable and does not lower the function and strength by corrosion, by incorporating tannin in a paint compsn.
CONSTITUTION: 0.1W20wt% tannin or compd. such as tannic acid is incorporated in a paint compsn. When this tannin-contg. paint is coated on an iron-containing substrate, tannin is reacted with the substrate to produce a black chelate compd. As a result, rust formed on the surface of the substrate does not become red rust, but becomes black rust whose main component is said chelate compd. At the same time, the iron-containing substrate is passivated, and dissolved oxygen present in said substrate is adsorbed. Thus, iron is not ionized and the formation of rust is inhibited.
