Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate discharge starting, shorten restarting time and to reduce the necessary voltage for restarting by a method wherein an auxiliary electrode with a heating function is provided in close proximity to one of the main electrodes of a luminous tube in order to use the heating action of the auxiliary electrode and the heat produced by the glow discharge. CONSTITUTION:Main electrodes 2, 3 are arranged on both sides and a filament 4' made from turngsten as an auxiliary electrode 4 supplied with a heating function is provded in close proximity to the main electrode 2. The desired amount of mercury and a suitable amount of argon gas and the like for helping starting are enclosed in a luminous lamp 1. One end of the filament 4' connected with the auxiliary electrode 4 is connected to a lighting apparatus 12 via a lead wire 10, the other end being connected to a lead wire 9 on the opposite electrode 3 side with a lead wire 7 via a resistor 6. With the discharge lamp thus constructed, starting of a discharge can be made extremely easy, while restarting time is shortened. In addition, the voltage necessary for restarting is also considerably reduced.
