Abstract

PURPOSE: A liquid crystal composition that contains a liquid crystal compound and a specific anthraquinone pigment, thus being suitably used for an electro- optical element, because the composition makes it possible to give a good color display by utilizing the guest-host effect of the liquid crystal in a space between two electrode plates.
CONSTITUTION: The objective composition comprises (A) a liquid crystal compound and (B) at least one of anthraquinones of formulaI[R1 is alkyl, alkoxy- substituted alkyl, alkenyl; R2 is H, -NHCOR1 on the 4-, 5- or 8-position; x is 1W3]. A preferable cxample of component B is a pigment of formula II, III, or IV (R3, R4 are alkyl, alkoxy-substituted alkyl, aralkyl; R5 is alkyl, alkoxy).
