Abstract
PURPOSE: To use effectively a monolithic type catalyst structure for cleaning automobile exhaust by continuously changing the Pt/Rh ratio of the catalyst from the inlet side of the exhaust to the discharge side.
CONSTITUTION: The Pt/Rh ratio of a monolithic type Pt-Rh ternary catalyst structure for cleaning automobile exhaust is continuously changed by adhering Rh high- densely and Pt low-densely on the exhaust inlet side of the honeycomb-structure support 3A of the catalyst structure and also adhering Rh low-densely and Pt high- densely on the discharge side of the catalyst support 3A. The honeycomb structure support 3A is set in a Pt-impregnating tank 4, an operation involving pushing up a Pt-containing liquid L up to the tank 4 by compressed air and soon forcing it down to a supplying portion 5 by an ejector is repeated until a desired adhesion density of Pt is obtained, and then support 3A is taken out and dried. Then, the exhaust inlet side (a) and the discharge side (b) of the support 3A is reversed and then subjected to the same operation using Rh-containing liquid instead of Pt-containing liquid. Thus, a catalyst structure having Pt/Rh ratio continuously changing in the flow direction of the exhaust can be obtained.
