Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform character segmentation at a high recognition rate by removing restrictions on the number of entered characters by simple constitution, by discriminating whether an objective stroke is a character stroke or not, by finding the distance between strokes to be segmented which are obtained from input coordinate data. CONSTITUTION:A stroke detector 1 detects the starting and ending points of strokes of input coordinate data S1 to output coordinate values S2, and X- coordinate maximum and minimum detector 2 detects the maximum and minimum values of X corrdinates in one stroke and stores them in a register. Similarly, the maximum and minimum values in the 2nd and 3rd strokes are stored in registers 4 and 5 respectively, and a distance discriminator 6 finds the center values of the coordinate values in the registers 3-4; when the center values have a difference exceeding a constant value, a character to be segmented is discriminated to input the output to a maximum and minimum updating device 19. In another case, a projection-extent discriminator 7, etc., is put in operation and when segmentation is not done finally, whether the strokes are character ones or not is disc riminated on the basis of information on the entry frame position of an entry frame position ROM15.
