Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high resolution of positional detection with a relatively rough pitch by arranging two kinds of index patterns shifted by 1/4 pitch vertically, horizontally and in the same number alternately.
CONSTITUTION: To extract two signals from one index 50, the index 50 is divided into four domains AWD, of which A and D are made same in pattern and B and C shifted by 1/4 pich from D. Independent photoelectric light receivers A'WD' are provided on the patterns AWD respectively, in-phase signals obtainable through the same pattern are synthesized by connecting the light receivers A' and B' or B' and C' in parallel, and thus two signals π/2 differnt in phase mutually are obtained. Assuming photoelectric conversion signals obtainable from the patterns A, D and B, C be S1, S2, lengths of the patterns AWD in the dirction x be xAWxD, and those in the direction be yAWyD, the signal S1 has density and notched line pitch averaged covering the length xA+xD in the direction x and the length yA+yD in the dirction y, and the same situation applied to the signal S2, too.
