Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce high quality, extra-fine metallic fibers which are widely used as friction material, by forcibly destroying the surface of a block with a self-excited vibration tool.
CONSTITUTION: Thin layers 41 of a metal block 1 are raked up on a rake face 31 of a cutting edge 3. Given self-excited vibration to a tool 2, the cutting edge 3 is displaced in a direction separated from the surface of metal block 1. This displacement cancels the cutting margin and cracks 6 are forcibly produced on the layers 41 gathered up on the rake face 31. As the cutting edge 3 returns to the surface of metal block 1, the cracked portions 6 of the layer are momentarily shorne and discharged as completely fractured fibers 5. Extra-fine fibers 5 with a diameter of below 100μc are continuously produced in accordance with the vibration frequency, taking the aforementioned process as a cycle.
