Abstract
PURPOSE:To concentrate the part of a sodium-slufur battery which suffers explosion due to abnormalities, such as overdischarge, on the bottom of the battery, and thereby enable the damage to the other part to be minimized, by making the mechanical strength of the bottom of the battery case smaller than that of the side of the battery case. CONSTITUTION:A sulfur 3 as a positive active material is packed into a cylindrical battery-case 4 made of a stainless steel. A sodium 1 as a negative active material is packed into a beta-alumina solid-electrolyte tube 2 and an alpha-alumina reservoir 5. Next, an alpha-alumina plate is placed on the top of the alpha-alumina reservoir 5 with a graphite oil packing 6 interposed between the alpha-alumina plate and the alpha-alumina reservoir 5 to hermetically close the battery, and the whole constitutes a cylindrical sodium-sulfur battery. The bottom of the case 4 of such a battery is provided with a thin part 10 in order to make the mechanical strength of the bottom smaller than that of the side part. Consequently, when a battery explosion which is due to an abnormally high temperature is caused by overdischarge or the like, the explosive part is concentrated on the bottom part, and the damage to the other part is minimized.
