Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain secure and quick combustion of a fuel mixture by applying laser beams, at least two with a certain interval, during the compression/combustion stroke of an internal combustion engine. CONSTITUTION:A combustion chamber 4 is formed by being surrounded by a cylinder head 1, a cylinder block 2 and a piston 3. A laser beam collecting means 7 mounted on the cylinder head 1 concentrates the laser beam at a predetermined point in the space of combustion chamber 4. At the most effective part for quick combustion, i.e. around that point in the mixture's swirling stream which indicates the maximum speed, the first laser beam is applied and, then, the subsequent beam or beams are applied to the unburst part at the upper stream side of the flame which is flowed off by said swirling.
