Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the electrolytic erasing of transparent electrode and counter electrode metals and improve the life of an electrochromic (EC) element by using oxidation reduction electrodes for the electrolyte of said element.
CONSTITUTION: Oxidation reduction electrodes such as organic acid oxidation reduction electrodes are used as the electrolyte of the EC element. For example, an aqueous soln. dissolved with quinhydrone sulfate is used. Thereby, the dissipation of SnO2 being transparent electrodes and the metal being counter electrode through electrolysis is eliminated. In addition, the lead-out wires of the transparent electrodes does not electrolytically dissipiate even if they are not applied with any protecting film. In this way, the inconveniences that the coloring and decoloring response speeds become low are eliminated, the element life is improved and the prodjction may be simplified.
