Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable the tone and characteristics of a multilayer EC display to be freely controlled by forming the titled element by the use of a fine crystalline noncoloring electrochromic (EC) material and making the EC materials forming display patterns different in color.
CONSTITUTION: Display electrodes 1, EC layers 2 of display patterns and insulation films 3 are formed on the 1st transparent substrate 4 and the 2nd transparent substrate 13, respectively. A transparent conductive film 12 is formed on the surface of the substrate 13 diametrally opposing to the substrate 4, and a fine crystalline noncoloring EC layer 11 is formed on the film 12. The layer 11 is formed by keeping the substrate 13 at an ordinary temperature under ≥6×10-4Torr degree of vacuum and evaporating WO3 by electron beams then heat treating the film 11 at around 350W400°C. A counter electrode 6 and an EC layer 5 are formed on the 3rd substrate 7. The three substrates 4, 13, 17 are affixed by way of spacers 9, and electrolyte 8 is injected therein, whereby the multilayer EC display element is completed. The extent of information is doubled with one element by making use of the EC layer 3 of the substrates 4, 13. It is possible to change the color tone as well by using the materials forming different colors for the EC materials of both EC layers 3.
