Abstract

PURPOSE: To automatically determine the course by only giving an instructed veering angle for the heading, by a method wherein a mechanism for adding the instructed veering angle to the heading and a mechanism for memorizing this information are additionally provided for an auto-pilot.
CONSTITUTION: When the instructed veering angle of a veering angle setting unit 4 is set at an angle α, the bearing ϕ it becomes equal to ϕ+α. When a memory indication signal Sm is given at time t, there is established the relation: bearing ϕitimit+α, where ϕt is the heading at time t. The input to an operating mechanism 2 becomes the bearing ϕe=α, and a rudder angle for establishing the condition ϕe=0 is given to the rudder through a servo mechanism 3 and the steering gear 9 so as to veer the ship 11 by the angle α. Thus veered heading ϕ is detected by a compass 12 of the ship 11, becomes an input signal for an adding mechanism 1, and a control loop for automatic steering is closed to provide a new heading ϕ=ϕt+α. Accordingly, the heading can be determined by only setting an angle α on the setting unit 4 as an instructed veering angle.
