PURPOSE: Specific β-lactam compounds including novel ones is made to react with a thiol to produce β-lactam compounds or their salts which are used as an antibacterial.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is H, methyl, hydroxyl; R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, H-protecting group; R4 is H, ester residual group; n is 0, 1) or its salt reacts with a thiol of R5-SH (R5 is H, monovalent organic group) or its reactive derivative to affords a lactam compound of formula II or its salt such as 3-(2- acetamide-ethylthio)-6-isopropyl-7-oxo-1-azabicyclo[3,2,0]hepto-2-ene-2-carboxylic benzyl ester. Some of compounds of formula I are novel and antibiotics obtained by fermentation of a microorganism such as Streptomyces cattleya (NRRL 8057).
