Abstract

PURPOSE:To quickly and easily measure the amount of organic matter in water by introducing water sample contg. an oxidizer and org. matter into a reaction zone packed with fine particle packings, and thoroughly diffusing and mixing the same thereby causing reaction quickly. CONSTITUTION:A reaction zone 5 consisting of a column which is kept at a constant temp. by a heating jacket 7 built-in with a heater 12 (symbol 16 is a temp. control device) and is internally packed with fine particulate packings (e.g. glass beads having about 0.005mm. grain size) 6 is used. Water sample contg. org. matter is injected from a sample injecting valve 4 into oxidizer carrier liquid fed from a liquid reservoir 1 and this is introduced into the reaction zone 5 to allow the org. matter in the sample to oxidize and convert the organic matter to CO2. Then, the above-mentioned carrier liquid is introduced to a gas-liquid contact device 9 to which air is being supplied through a CO2 scrubber 12. The formed CO2 is transferred into the gas phase, thence the air contained with CO2 is sent to a CO2 analyzer 10 through a dehumidifier 8, whereby the amount of CO2 is determined, and from this value, the amount of the org. matter in the sample is calculated.
