Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce hydrogen under low voltage with good efficiency at low cost by using a fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane having phosphorus-contg. ion exchange groups and electrolyzing water by a specific method. CONSTITUTION:In producing hydrogen from cathode by electrolyzing water, a fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane contg. an ion-exchange capacity of 1.0- 4.0 milli equivalent per gram of a dry resin and using phosphonic acid groups as its phosphorus-contg. ion exchange groups is used. A gas or liquid permeable anode or cathode of 0.01-30mu average pore sizes and 30-90% porosity is closely adhered onto at least one surface of this exchange membrane. Platinum group metals, their alloys and their oxides are used as the anode material and platinum group metals, their alloys and graphite, iron, and stainless steel carrying these are used as the material of the cathode. Water is put into the anode chamber partitioned by the cation exchange membrane and is electrolyzed.
