Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a modified asphalt in which penetration index and adhesive properties to metals are improved, by reacting an asphalt with a reactive mesitylene- formaldehyde resin in the presence of an acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Alkylbenzene mixt contg. not less than 70wt% mesitylene is reacted with formaldehyde under reflux in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid) to obtain a reactive mesitylene-formaldehyde resin (B) having an oxygen content of 10wt% or more and a number-average MW of 200W550. Then 5W30pts.wt. above resin component (B) is reacted with 100pts.wt. asphalt (A) in the presence of 0.05W0.5wt% (based on the combined weight of the asphalt A and the resin B) acid catalyst (e.g. oxalic acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid) at 180W240°C for 1.5W4hr.
USE: Repair for paved roads, covering materials for steel pipes.
