Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a treatment method for waste gas (or exhaust gas) which has a high removing capability for H2S, SO2, NH3, etc., is simple in equipments and processes, and needs no expensive chemicals by using a system in which waste gas in introduced to a spark discharge field where it is oxidized by coexisting oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: One end of cylindrical electrodes 4 and 5 provided inside a pipe 1 whose both ends are closed is connected to a high-tension power source 7 through a protective resistance 6, and the other open ends 8 and 9 of the electrodes are faced each other through an electric insulator 11. Voltage is applied to the cylindrical electrodes 4 and 5 so as to cause spark discharge between the open ends 8 and 9. Waste gas from the inlet pipe 2 flows out in a swirl flow from the periphery of the open end 8 through a spiral streak groove 13 and then is discharged through a discharge port 14 and a discharge pipe 3 from the inner circumference of the open end 9. During the period, sulfurous compounds in the waste gas are oxidized by coexisting oxygen to SO3 and also nitrogenous compounds are oxidized. The waste gas is washed with water to convert SO3 into sulfuric acid and the waste gas is discharged in harmless gas. In case where harmful components are only nitrogenous compounds, no washing with water is needed.
