Abstract
PURPOSE:To prepare an optical fiber suitable for a single mode transmission of low loss, by forming a silica glass layer containing P2O5 in the inner layer of a quartz tube, a clad layer of a pure silica glass film and a core layer of high refractive index. CONSTITUTION:The inner wall of a quartz tube 14 is coated with a silica glass layer 13 containing P2O5 which can be synthesized at a lower temperature than pure SiO2 for preventing the diffusion of OH groups from the quartz tube 14 by the vapophase chemical reaction method. A pure silica glass film having a smaller intrinsic light absorption than silica containing P2O5 is deposited on the inner surface of the silica glass layer 13 as a clad layer 12. A glass film containing GeO2, etc. having a higher refractive index than the clad layer 12 is then formed as a core layer 11. Thus, a uniform optical fiber having a low loss can be prepared in a time about 1/3 that in the case of the conventional method.
