Abstract

PURPOSE: To strengthen a glass article while controlling the strengthening degree and preventing uneven strengthening by setting a sound absorbing member between an ultrasonic vibration element and the article to control the intensity of ultrasonic waves applied to the article.
CONSTITUTION: A glass article heated to a temp. from the strain point to the softening point is put into a cooling liquid provided with an ultrasonic vibration element, and it is strengthened by liquid-cooling while applying ultrasonic vibration. At this time, a sound absorbing member is set between the element and the article to control the intensity of ultrasonic waves applied to the article. The member is made of plastics, concrete, wood or rubber which absorbs ultrasonic waves and has heat resistance pref. of 60°C or above. The member is set between the article and the element so that it or a plurality of the members cover the about whole surface of the article.
