Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity aromatic polyester polycarbonate by carrying out the washing of the methylene chloride solution of an aromatic polyester polycarbonate through a specific procedure in high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous acid solution is first added to the methylene chloride solution of an armatic polyester polycarbonate to adjust the pH of the system to ca. ≤3. An oil-in-water type dispersed phase is thus formed, from which the aqueous phase is separated. In the next step, an aqueous alkali solution is added to the resulting methylene chloride phase containing the polymer to adjust the pH of the system to ca. ≥10. Another oil-in-water type dispersed phase is thus formed, from which the aqueous phase produced is separated. The resulting methylene chloride phase is subsequently washed with water at least twice followed by drying it in an appropriate way, thus giving the objective purified polyester polycarbonate. The original aromatic polyester polycarbonate can be prepared by the interfacial polycondensation between an aqueous solution of an alkali salt of a dihydroxydiaryl compound, a methylene chloride solution of terephthaloyl chloride (or of its mixture with isophthaloyl chloride), and phosgene, consisting of two kinds of structural units of formula I and II (X is a divalent group; aromatic nuclei may have substituents.
