Abstract
PURPOSE: To eliminate a trace of polymerization-inhibiting impurity from a solvent for the polymerization of olefins, etc., and increase the rate of polymerization, by treating the solvent with a zeolite which is ion-exchanged with transition metal ions.
CONSTITUTION: A trace of impurity in a solvent, preferably a solvent for the polymerization of olefins (e.g. hydrocarbons such as hexane, etc.), is eliminated by treating the solvent with zeolite which is ion-exchanged with a transition metal (e.g. ferrous iron, etc.). The solution of ferrous chloride in distilled water bubbled with nitrogen is added to zeolite and the reaction is carried out at 60°C in nitrogen atomosphere to exchange sodium ions of the zeolite with ferrous ions. A solvent, e.g. hexane, etc., is added to the modified zeolite thus prepared, and the solvent is let to stand for a day in nitrogen atomosphere to eliminate the impurity. An olefin, e.g. propylene etc., is polymerized in the purified solvent to give the polymer having high quality.
