Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a guest-host type liquid crystal display device having a prolonged life, obtd. by adding a specified anthraquinone dye to the layer of liquid crystal material.
CONSTITUTION: 1.5W4wt% of a multi-color dye consisting of an anthraquinone dye of formula I or II (wherein X, Y, Z, are -R, -OR, -NHR, -NR2; R is H, alkyl, phenyl) is added to the layer of liquid crystal material, such as nematic liquid crystal or cholesteric liquid crystal to obtain a liquid crystal display device which exhibits good stability to sunlight and heat and has a life ranging from 30W500 times of length in experiments using ultraviolet-light irradiation.
