Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the subject device wherein triak included in the circuit is consurrently used as a part of a pulse generating circuit, whereby direct lighting is possible from a low-voltage power source by a compact structure.
CONSTITUTION: When a power source 4 is turned on, a triak voltage VT is applied to a S element 12 which is a voltage responsive element, through a primary coil 10 and a pulse generating capacitor 11 at the time the triak 5 is non-conductive, thereby making 3S element conductive. By this procedure a current flows to a closed circuit including the power source 1, an inductance 2 and the like to charge the pulse generating capacitor 11. Then, when the triak 5 becomes conductive, a pulse discharge occurs to light the discharge lamp 4. Then, when the discharge lamp 4 is shifted to stationary lighting, the voltage applied to both ends of the pulse generating capacitor 11 coincides with a discharge lamp voltage, and the 3S element becomes non-conductive, and hence the pulse generating circuit stops its operation.
