Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce caustic alkali soln. of high concn. at a high current efficiency by use of electrolytic cell of simple structure, by introducing electrolytic product yielded in each cathodic chamber to the upper part of a common horizontal gas/liq. separating header to separate gas from liq., and by returning the residual liq. through the lower part of the header to each cathodic chamber. CONSTITUTION:To the lower part of each cathodic chamber 3 are fed water or dil. aq. soln. of caustic alkali from a liq.-feed apparatus 6 in parallel with electrolyzed liq. returned from a gas/liq. separating header 11. Alkali ions produced by electrolysis enter the cathodic chamber 3 through an ion exchange membrane 1 so that caustic alkali concn. of the soln. in each cathodic chamber 3 increases. The electrolytic soln. ascends by the lifting power of gas electrolytically produced through each cathodic chamber 3 to the upper region 9 of the header 11, where it is separated from the gas, and flows into each cathodic chamber 3 through the lower region 10. A portion of the soln. having flowed into the lower region 10 is drawn off as product. Ion exchange membrane exhibiting max. current efficiency in high alkali concn. region is selected for the ion exchange membrane 1.
