Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the abrasion resistance of a metal, by coating the surface of the metal with a material which melts and generates blow holes by heating at high temperature, and irradiating the surface with laser beam, thereby easily forming a porous layer on the metal surface, and imparting oil-retaining characteristics to the surface. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a metal 1 is coated with a coating material 2 which generates a number of blow holes by sudden heating at high temperature, and irradiated with a high-intensity laser beam 3 to form a porous layer having a number of pores and to impart oil-retainability to the surface layer. Since the laser beam irradiation has a hardening effect, the porous layer thus obtained has improved hardness and abrasion resistance. The heat-exchanging efficiency is also improved, and the metal thus treated is useful as a boiling heat transfer wall of a boiler, etc.
