Abstract

PURPOSE: To making the entire core up of ductile cast excellent in the toughness by eliminating fading through an inoculation of the cast conducted at the pouring inlet of the mold in producing a compound roll with a ductile cast core.
CONSTITUTION: First, a shell layer 4 of a compound roll is casted in a mold 1 composed of a chiller 2 and a sand mold 3 and then, quenched by the chiller whereby the the hardness of the surface is increased, improving the wear resistance. Subsequently, a melted pig iron 10 with the graphite spherodized is cased in the mold 1 from a laddle 9. Here, at the spruce 6 of the mold 1, Si affiliated inoculant ranging from 4 to 48 mesh, such as Fe-Si, Ca-Si and Zr-Si agents at an addition rate 0.2 to 2 kg/sec. in an amount of 0.1 to 1.0% by weight in terms of pure Si. The inoculation, made immediately prior to the casting, no fading occurs before solidification after the casting into the mold 1. In this manner, the entire core layer can be made up of ductile cast excellent in the toughness.
