このバランサー3もシェル1の後側に設けた。図1に示
すように構成されたヘッドでは、重心位置がフェース面
から後側に移動し、重心深度が深くなる。重心深度が深
くなれば慣性モーメントが大きくなるので、ボールの方
向安定性が良くなる。一般に、ステンレス材料等で形成
されるヘッドは内部が中空になっているためにある程度
の厚みをフェース面に持たせなければならないため、重
心深度が浅くなる。しかしながら、マグネシウム合金で
シェル1及びソール部2を形成したものでは強度を保ち
ながら薄肉化を図ることができ、ヘッド体積も大きくす
ることができる。マグネシウム合金だけでヘッドを構成
した場合には、ヘッド重量が130g程度となり、重量
が不足してバランスがとりにくくなる。ドライバーと呼
ばれるゴルフクラブのヘッド重量は200g程度がバラ
ンス良く振り切れるとともに飛距離の増大にもつなが
る。このため、バランサー3および肉厚部1Aによりヘ
ッド全体の重量を200g程度とする。なお、低重心を
図る場合にはソール部2を形成する金属材料を比重の大
きいものとする。あるいはソール部2の内面にバランサ
