Description
図1は、本実施形態に係る液晶表示装置の模式的な構成を示す図である。図1に示すように、本実施形態に係る液晶表示装置1は、スクリーンSに、映像、より詳しくは動画像を投射する投射型の画像表示装置である。液晶表示装置1は、発光装置10と、照明光学系12と、液晶パネル14b、14g、14rと、合成光学系16と、投射光学系18とを有する。
また、制御部20は、画素電極34への電圧印加を制御することで、液晶パネル14の液晶素子38の動作を制御する。制御部20は、例えば外部機器などから、映像を表示するための映像信号を取得する。制御部20は、その映像信号に基づき電圧印加を制御することで、液晶パネル14の液晶層37が透過可能な光量を制御して、映像を表示させる。
ここで、制御部20は、フレーム周期Cを第1周期C1と第2周期C2とに分割して、第1周期C1と第2周期C2との電圧の印加時間を、個別に制御する。以下、より詳細に説明する。図4は、本実施形態に係る制御部のブロック図である。図5は、制御部による制御のタイムチャートの一例である。図4に示すように、制御部20は、映像信号取得部40と、周期分割部42と、信号算出部44と、液晶駆動部46と、光制御部48とを有する。映像信号取得部40と、周期分割部42と、信号算出部44と、液晶駆動部46と、光制御部48とは、図示しない制御部20の記憶部に記憶されたプログラムであるが、専用のハードウェア(回路など)によって実現されてもよい。
ここで、比較例について説明する。図7は、第1比較例における制御のタイムチャートの一例である。第1比較例は、第1周期C1と第2周期C2とに分割しているが、第1周期C1の印加時間を、第2周期C2の印加時間に対して小さく設定せず、互いの印加時間を同じ値とした例を示している。この場合、線分V4aに示すように、第1周期C1において、時刻t1から時刻t1xaまでの間、ON状態とされ、時刻t1xaから時刻t2までの間、OFF状態とされる。この場合、時刻t1xaから時刻t2までのOFF状態の時間が短くなるため、第2周期C2までに液晶素子38の配向が十分に戻らなくなる。従って、図7の線分V6aに示すように、時刻t2において、出射光が適切に出射されず
尾引きが生じてしまう。
次に、本実施形態の変形例について説明する。図9は、変形例に係る補正係数を説明する図である。本実施形態では、第1時間D1を算出するための補正係数αは、一定値であった。しかし、制御部20は、補正係数αを、一定値としなくてもよい。例えば、制御部20は、補正係数αを、第2時間D2(第2信号値)の大きさに応じて異なる値としてもよい。より詳しくは、制御部20は、第2時間D2(第2信号値)が大きくなるに従って、補正係数αを小さな値としてもよい。この場合、例えば、第2時間D2が0の場合、補正係数αが最大値αmaxとなり、第2時間D2が最大値D2maxの場合、補正係数αが0となる。図9の線分α1に示すように、補正係数αは、第2時間D2が大きくなるに従って、直線状に小さな値となってもよい。また、図9の線分α2に示すように、補正係数αは、第2時間D2が大きくなるに従って、下に凸の曲線状に小さな値となってもよい。また、図9の線分α3に示すように、補正係数αは、第2時間D2が大きくなるに従って、上に凸の曲線状に小さな値となってもよい。ここで、第2時間D2(第2信号値)が大きくなるほど、ON状態が長くなるため、尾引きが顕著となるおそれがある。従って、制御部20は、第2時間D2が大きくなるほど補正係数αを小さくすることで、第1時間D1を小さくして電圧印加を停止させる時間を長くする。これにより、尾引きが顕著となるおそれがある場合に、電圧の印加を十分に停止することで、液晶素子38の配向を適切に戻して、尾引きをより効果的に抑制する。さらに、第2時間D2(第2信号値)が小さくなるほど補正係数αを大きくすることで、第2時間D2が短く尾引きが顕著とならない場合に、電圧の印加の停止期間を少なくして、液晶素子38の応答性を高めることができる。

Claims (4)
- フレーム周期毎に映像を表示するための映像信号に基づき液晶表示装置の駆動を制御する制御装置であって、
前記フレーム周期を、第1周期、及び前記第1周期より後の第2周期に分割する周期分割部と、
前記映像信号に基づき、前記液晶表示装置の液晶素子を駆動するための第1信号値と第2信号値とを算出する信号算出部と、
前記第1周期において前記第1信号値で前記液晶素子を駆動させ、前記第2周期において前記第2信号値で前記液晶素子を駆動させる液晶駆動部と、
前記液晶素子に照射する光を制御する光制御部と、を有し、
前記光制御部は、前記第1周期において前記液晶素子に照射する光を遮断し、前記第2周期において前記液晶素子に光を照射し、
前記信号算出部は、前記第1信号値を、前記第2信号値と予め定めた補正係数に基づき前記第1周期において電圧を印加する第1時間として算出し、前記第2信号値を、前記第2周期において前記電圧を印加する第2時間として算出し、
前記液晶駆動部は、前記第1周期において、前記第1時間だけ前記液晶素子に前記電圧を印加し、前記第2周期において、前記第2時間だけ前記液晶素子に前記電圧を印加し、
前記第1時間は、前記第2時間より短い、
制御装置。 - 前記信号算出部は、前記液晶素子に印加する電圧の値と前記電圧を印加する時間との、前記第1周期における積分値が、前記第2周期における前記積分値より小さくなるように、前記第1信号値を算出する、請求項1に記載の制御装置。
- 前記液晶駆動部は、前記第1周期の開始から前記第1時間が経過するまでの間、前記電圧を印加し、前記第1時間が経過してから前記第2周期の開始までの間、前記電圧の印加を停止する、請求項1又は請求項2に記載の制御装置。
- 請求項1から請求項3のいずれか1項に記載の制御装置と、
前記液晶素子を有する液晶パネルと、を有する、液晶表示装置。
